The Hill - NiCad America Tour 2009
International band from The Hague goes USA
From August 27 the international band NiCad from The Hague is on a three-week-tour through North-America. Apart from performing, the band will also visit a renowned American College to give a lecture on self built electronic instruments. Furthermore the band will be the subject of a yearly video competition at this college, with their single ‘In Color’. De tour starts off in New York with a special concert together with the well-known Jazz and R&B singer and performance artist M. Nahadr, who will feature at The Hague Pure Jazz in the Netherlands this fall.
The five musicians, all based in the Hague, originate from Japan, Israel, Chile, America and Germany. NiCad has organized this tour through North America together with Foundation Traveling Sounds*.
Grand start in New York
The beginning of the tour starts with two great parties (by the name of MFest) in New York in Public Assembly and Webster Hall/The Studio, together with the unprecedented singer and performance artist M. Nahadr. After two more concerts in the Big Apple, NiCad continuous the tour with Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and Williamsburg. From Williamsburg it goes on to Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Detroit to end again in New York with a last concert at Arlene’s Grocery on September 16.
Lecture
On the 7th of September the members of NiCad will give a lecture about their self-built electronic instruments followed by a live electronic performance the same evening at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. In this lecture they utilize technology to further understand the medium of sound, while examining it’s relation to musical tension and release. These works have been presented before at ICMC - Belfast, Transmediale - Berlin and NIME - New York.
Video competition
The next day NiCad has been invited to be the subject of a video competition at Swem’s Media Center at the college of W&M in Williamsburg. On this day NiCad will assist in making the preparations for the actual competition which will take place in February 2010, when the students will get a certain time limit to create their best music video of NiCad’s single ‘In Color’. The competition will be co-judged by NiCad.
About NiCad
NiCad is a multi-national experimental rock band that began in 2004 when five young foreigners met each other in The Hague’s Royal Conservatory in Holland. The group quickly found their own unique style by integrating their musical backgrounds formed by growing up in Japan, Israel, Chile, the United States, and Germany.
In 2008 alone, NiCad’s latest CD ‘The Hill’ got voted ‘Best Album of the Year’ by The Hague’s Pop Music Press, they won first prize at the prestigious GPZH competition (Big Prize of South Holland), and they won the crossover competition ‘Check Mo’ with the song ‘ Wacka’ , which they wrote together with the Arabic formation ‘Group l’ Ambiance’.
The Music
With live performances using self-built electronic instruments in a power rock setting, fronted by a charismatic American singer/songwriter standing next to a Japanese glam-rocker in kimono, NiCad brings a dynamic on stage that keeps listeners captivated and on the edge of their seat. Within one month of their first gig, NiCad won a competition that awarded them a performance in front of 175,000 people at the music festival, ParkPop. This placed them directly in the limelight of their local music scene. Since their first album, Everyday I Grow, was released in 2006 by Dying Giraffe Recordings, NiCad has played in venues, at festivals, and on radio stations throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and Israel. In July 2008, they released their second album, The Hill, which was voted “Album of the Year 2008″ by The Hague’s Pop Music Press.
In the same year, NiCad won first prize in the GPZH competition (Big Prize of South Holland), which gave the band an even broader appeal, placing them on stages in some of the largest Summer music festivals in Holland. Also in 2008, NiCad wrote the song Wacka with the Arabic band, Group L’Ambiance, and won first prize at the “Check Mo!” crossover competition.
Currently, NiCad is in America looking for new partners to team up with for bookings, promotion, concept development, and the production of their next album.
